Does anyone have any tips on restoring painted over serial number and ID plates (the small light weight stamped aluminum plates)My 1959 MF50 tractor had been painted several times over the years by previuos owners and the plates are messed up, legible but smeared with paint. I have stripped the tractor to bare metal and restored it properly and hate like heck to put these messed up plates back on like they are.

Thanks Guys, Over the weekend I stripped all the paint off the plates, painted the entire plate semi-flat black. After the paint dried I used a 600 grit nail file board to lightly remove the paint from the raised letter and numbers. Plates look great.

I use carb cleaner and mask off everything else i don't want removed.

as another poster mentioned.. carb cleaner is good at removing all paint.. even oem paint that may delineate info ont he plate.

If it is just simple 'darkening' int he stamped areas.. that can be mimiced with 'antiquing' paint.. however if it is a real silkscreened type of panel... I think you may be stuck going at it with a qtip and trying to stop before you remove all the base material.

A heatgun may help you ..

I use Chemdip. It generally takes off most everything, and what doesn't come off I can generally use a little 0000 Steel Wool and get the rest.

Be careful though... in reply to DaveS, 09-20-2007 16:21:07
Sometimes Chemdip will remove ALL paint, so if your tag has some black paint on it, it may remove that as well.

Thank you for the information, was trying to salvage the underlying black background. The letters and numbers are raised and unpainted with a flat black background. Guess I could strip the complete tag, paint and lightly sand off the letter and number tops with 320 or 600 grit paper on a wood block.
