Gentlemen,

Been awhile since i have been on this board, but you never steered me wrong.

Had someone paint my Deere and they did a great job. Somehow, the carb [MS TSX-245] was painted blk instead of green, so he re-painted it green [w/out removing blk]...since painted, it has bubbled in many places and w/in 1-2 months.

Question, what is the best way of getting both layers of paint off? I beleive the outer green you could mostly peel with your hand, but what about the black? i sure want to prevent any debris from getting into the small brass air-ways throughout the carb.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Regards,
tstex

sand it down by hand or use oven cleaner and a tooth brush or a heavy tire brush that worked geat for me

If you are worried about the passages, that means it is disassembled. Soak it in carb cleaner, that will take it to bare metal, then blow out the passages with compressed air. Or you can strip it with methylene choride -- don't get any of that inside or on the gasket, etc. The paint is lifting either because the surface is not clean or because the topcoat is not compatible with the black.

Guys,

The carb is not disassembled, and i was trying to avoid having to do that again, yet achieve maximum results.

I overhauled the carb 3 yrs ago and either replaced or cleaned everything [soaked it in the carb-cleaning-bucket for 2 weeks]...it was completely disassembled & every part possible removed down to the smallest hiding brass orifice. Since reinstalled, it has performed flawlessly.

If i do need to pull it apart and soak again, i will. But, i was trying to avoid all of that if i could strip it w/out, AND not cause any problems.

Thanks again guys for your comments - if you have any questions, pls let me know?

thanks,
tstex

why not take the carb off and glass bead it back to the metal? If all openings are securely sealed wouldn't that work too?

if the black layer is sound and not peeling, i would leave that on. you can try oven cleaner to remove the outer layer. a scotchbrite pad and rubber gloves work good. after you get the paint off, wash the outside good with soap and water to get rid of the oven cleaner.. then use a prep sol or pre cleano type cleaner, scotch brite again and prep for paint
