I am getting close to done on the painting of the old gal. Hood and nose cone is all thats left. Had some scratches and the guys at the auto paint store told me to use ppg epoxy primer then to coat it with sandable primer from ppg and work the scratches out. Then to recoat it all with epoxy again before the top coat of JD classic green. I know the first thing is you will ask is why not use ppg urethane. Answer is I had the classic green and want to get it used up. Is the second coat of epoxy neccessary?

you could do as they suggested, but why. Epoxy, then 2k primer and then paint. Option 2 is Epoxy, 2k primer, sealer(could be epoxy), paint.

It does makes sense. epoxy often is used as a primer and a sealer. Plus it'll be all the same color under the final finish which is important on some automotive glamor paints.

only reason i can think of to recoat with expoxy primer before the color coat would be a possibility of the paint reacting with the sandable primer. could be the paint is an alkyd and it may lift the primer. i would do a quick test on some scrap metal, shoot the sandable primer, then shoot some color on it and see if it lifts.

No, I used PPG epoxy primer #MP170, then coated with PPG 2 part urethane surfacer (sandable primer) #MP182, sanded, then sprayed color coat (PPG Omni acrylic enamel) on my JD M. Turned out beautiful.

You don't "need" to do it. It is just an added adhesion insurance that you probably never see pay off in your application. My advise would be to "use up" that old tech. paint on something else. Poor excuse to use '50's technology over the good stuff you already have down. Each to his own , I guess.
