Any suggestions on a good way to remove paint from aluminum emblems? The International 240 I bought has, fortunately, all of it's emblems. However at some time in it's past it was painted (emblems and all) with a heavy layer of construction yellow paint. I have had a difficult time, to say the least, stripping this paint. Whatever kind of paint it is, even aviation stripper does little against it.

Being aluminum, I can't strip the emblems through electrolysis, or with caustic without reaction to the metal itself. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

I'd also be interested to hear any techniques for painting the emblems . . . the background is supposed painted and the raised numbers are not. There's no way I can hand paint around the raised names and get a neat job.

Thanks

I"ve not done this so you may want to try on something you dont care about. Strip as described in thiner over night. Then to shine it back up spray it with oven cleaner-let sit for a few mintues then buff clean with a rag. Supposed to work well on old auto trim. As I said I"ve not done it myself however.

I recently did this on my restoration project project. I soaked the plates in laquer thinner over night then in remover and scrubbed it off with a scuff pad to bare aluminum. Washed the plates with soapy water, rinsed and then wiped them down with enamel reducer. Sprayed the plates with semi gloss black, let dry and used a fine grit finger nail board to lightly sand off the raised letters and numbers. They look like new plates.
