I've got a 1939 Allis Chalmers B that I am repairing for regular use. When I got it the paint was peeling terribly and the sheet metal was getting rusty in spots. I have been sanding it for months( a little at a time) to remove the loose paint and rust. There is no longer any flaking paint and it's smooth enough for me. I've never repainted anything before but after reading this forum for a while I think I'm ready to give it a whack. My Question: Should I use a sealer before repainting? I plan to use epoxy paint and primer, but I'm worried about it not sticking to the paint left on the tractor. I have no idea what was used on it last time. Any/all advice or comments welcome.

Joey; Assuming you've scuffed everything you want to paint and removed the rust too, you'll want to wipe it down with an wax and oil remover you can get at your local auto paint store. You can then follow with the epoxy primer as it is made to go on bare metal as well as existing paint. You can then follow with your top coat. Be sure to apply within the time window given for the particular epoxy.

Thanks Glen, I appreciate it. You mentioned another one of the many things I learned here. I had no idea that the top coat had to be applied during a cetain time period following the primer. I used to think "dry is dry" and you can put on the final coat any time after priming. It'll be interesting to see how my first paint job works out.
Thanks again,
Joe R

Your welcome Joey; I might add this since I don't know what primer you are using. You said it was an epoxy, carefully read the spec sheet for it and it will tell you when you can top coat. I use Omni epoxy primer and it has a three day window. I've been told that it is best to apply the top coat within one hour for best adhesion. The reason for this is because it uses a chemical bonding process rather than mechanical. If you go past the three day window you have to scuff the paint and recoat with primer for optimal adhesion. This a great site for info. I'm learning too.
