I have a 57 Allis Chalmers CA that I am restoring. I plan on sandblasting the outside of the gas tank, but it has gas in it as I have been using the tracor up till now. What steps do I need to take to keep the tank from exploding, etc while undergoing this process? Any help will be appreciated since I have never done this before. Thanks

Craig I sandblasted gas tanks but filled them to the brim with diesel fuel, worked great. This was at the request of a customer, personally I would not sand blast a gas tank of my own.

Craig,

You probably want to use a material like Black blast, or black beauty or similar. It is black residue from coal fired power plants. It costs about 20% more than fine screened sand, but cuts better. It also won't spark.

Should have no problems.

Be careful on the bottom, they are usually rusty inside and out and one touch of the sandblaster will upen up leaks. Might be a good time to buy a liner kit and use it.

Drain all gas , let dry completely , fill with water. It would need air to expload. Water will displace all air. There wouldn't be any fumes left anyway but the water is just added insurnce. The inside of a tank will always smell like old fuel. That is not fumes. It takes liquid evaporating to make fumes that are explosive.
