After the local rip off joint charged $13 for 18" steel pipe that diddnt fit, and wont take it back,

We got another 18" black iron pipe from lowes, for $4. Will BBQ paint stick to it?

BTW, sorry for the dumb question, but you can clearly see how much i know about the subject :-D

If it's going to get hot, the paint already on it should be removed prior to applying high temp paint.

Lance, If your project needs to look nice, I would debur the ends on a grinder, no sharp edges. Then scuff it with some medium to fine sandpaper, followed by cleaning with acetone, laquer thinner, or even gasoline. Sometime black pipe has sort of a scale on the surface that the sandpaper will take off. When dry the BBQ paint should stick just fine. Are you using BBQ paint because it will get hot? If you dont need heat resistance any black paint will work. Of course they come in glossy, or flat depending on what look you want. BBQ paint is generally a flat black.

Good luck
