I'm going to paint my Massey Ferguson tractor using original Massey Ferguson enamel from the dealer. I want to use hardner. What kind of hardner should I use? Can I use regular enamel reducer with this paint?

Beware of cheap paint. The $25 a gallon stuff you see at the farm and home stores is usually alkyd enamel and will be chalky and faded in three or four years of weather. You can't beat urethane for long lasting shine and protection.

If you are going to the trouble to clean up and prep the tractor why not finish it with a good coat of paint? But, be prepared to spend upwards of $70 a gallon for it.

Also, you'll need primer and maybe primer-surfacer. Glennster is right about getting the entire set of products (filler, primer, color coat, etc.) from the same manufacturer. I thought that was silly until last year I restored/painted my old garden tractor and watched one brand of enamel color coat lift another brand of primer into a wrinkly mess. D'oh!

if you are buying the paint from the dealer, get the reducer and hardener there too. if you start mixing different product lines you can open all kinds of cans of worms.

You must also reallize that there is no such thing as "original Massey Ferguson paint". They don't and never did make paint , and the paint they use now is more than likely NOT what they used 10,20 30 40 or 50 years ago. You can use it if you wish but don't be mislead into thinking it is better , more original than any other out there. It is the color code itself that you need to get from people who have already restored a Massey the year that you are doing and have come up with a correct match. Then you can get that color in any technology paint you can afford.Don't be another victim of our country's "marketing" experts!
