Ok, now don't go off deep end on me, but I was just wandering if anyone still deals with or know of people that deal with candy apple type paint anymore. Is it a lost art and just a thing of the past?

It's still used in the custom bike world where the areas are small and usually rounded. Nowadays you can get the same affects with a lot less work with the factory colors with the pearls , mica , prizmatic chips etc and they are relatively simple to spray in BC/CC.

PT Cruisers still used a tri-coat (candy apple) as late as 2001 on at least one of their firey reds.Base of silver/tinted clear/clear coat. Real fun to match if it's an insurance job and only getting paid to paint a fender!! I've got a real good (loyal) customer who has one and I had to do just that very type job on it. Turned out perfect. You just have to keep pulling back the masking as you add tinted clear coats til the shade in right then clear it.

I painted a jeep of all things with candy red. That was about 1979. The DuPont candies of that day, you had to shoot a metallic base coat to have ANY depth to the paint. I did a metallic gold base, then the colors (1 candy red and 2 candy blues) , then a gallon and a half of clear ON A JEEP CJ7! Looked good for all of a day. Jeep bodies flex like no tommorow. I spent months getting rid of all the spot welds, dents and waves. One trip around the block brought 'em all back.

In the 70s I painted a midget red with a yellow flip flop. Looked like a melon. Duh!

Candy is unpopular for a reason. It's miserable. Expensive. The color darkens as thickness increases causing striping and splotching if uneven spray technique. Touch up, forget it. Gorgeous if done right but you better entomb it in a acrylic block if you want it to last.
