I have a 1958 JD 45 combine I would like to fix up a little. It has some surface rust. Sand blasting is out of the question due to size. Any thoughts on what would be a good primer for this?

I finished this summer a jd #25 pull type combine. I DID sandblast the whole thing, even underneath. As was said before, don't rule sandblasting out. I used paint from the jd dealer and painted it in sections as the surface area was too much for me to do at once and it was outside. Good luck. I will post some photos when I learn how.

Do you think the Deere buff primer would be better than the red oxide enamel that they have at Tractor Supply?

Don't rule out sandblasting.

jeez a combine has to be a devil to paint. if you are not looking for a high quality automotive finish, and want to keep the budget reasonable, go with a tractor supply or farm and fleet alkyd enamel implement paint. they also have a primer for their paint that can handle less than ideal prepped surfaces. i'd go with the valspar hardener too, gives you a better shine, and will last longer too.you are prolly looking at 3-4 gallons of paint, maybe 3 gallons of primer..... whew, i dont envy you on that project!!!!!
