I'am going to be painting a old IH garden tractor in the spring when it gets warm enough and i've pretty much sandblasted everything..... ..... I used the black beauty type media and it's really not that rough, but on the hood, fenders and the like i want a smoother paint finish.....So what grit paper would be the best to use after the blasting before i shoot the epoxy primer..... ..Thanks TMF

Leave the surface as blasted , then epoxy prime (2 coats) , then as per the re-coat window for the epoxy , spray 2-3 coats of good urethane catylized primer-surfacer. THEN wet sand that with 600 grit to get the smooth surface you need to paint. If any body work to fill you may need more surfacer to get it perfect. Personally , I spray a thinned coat of epoxy before paint as a sealer/adhesion promoter and to get a chemical bond to the paint as apposed to a sand scratch bond (mechanical). I believe it prevents the easy chipping of paint that some seem to complain about with the "new" paints.

320 or 400. Some prefer 400. I used 320 with no problems.

150-180 followed by wax and grease remover followed by epoxy followed by surfacer -- For best results you need surfacer over epoxy on sheet metal regardless of what you did.

On my 850 I had the sheet metal sandblasted and then did the body work. Some use 180 after that and then prime with epoxy followed by a filler/surfacer primer and then sand with 320 or 400 for a smooth finish. Using the filler/surfacer primer will give you a nice smooth finish. Epoxy has good adhesion properties on bare metal and painted surfaces. Some of mine was not sanded, but just primered with epoxy and is worked well. If you do a search of the archives there is extensive information on painting sandblasted surfaces, preparation, primers, top coats and painting techniques.
