Restoring an F-20. It is currently totally disassembled. What is the best way to paint it? I was going to paint the small parts while off and the rails and tranny/motor and then assemble everything. But what about the bolts and fasteners? Can I assemble after painting and then do another coat over everythig?
Help.

Paint everything separately, assemble and touch up the bolts with a small brush -- the repaint of the bolts is usually not that noticeable. I personally do not like the idea of another coat after reassembling. The F-20 is fairly simple, but sometimes you can exceed the recoat time after assembly. I would not try that on a complicated tractor.

Hello Scott; If you are doing an accurate restoration remember that not all bolts were painted but used in assembly after everything else was assembled. My Ford has a combination of painted and unpainted bolts and nuts. Find an expert for your particular tractor and see what they did at the factory.

When assembling /painting parts, i always put on several light coats where the parts bolted on, and allowed that to dry. then after assembly, i would paint the job, and there wouldn't be any problem with no paint under the parts. and no paint knocked off any painted bolts.

You just answered your own question, yes usually I tear apart and prep, then I prime and paint all the small parts and whats still together of the tractor assemble the shoot another coat ot 2. dont put the hood on etc when you shoot the last time. Also make sure you follow all instructions as to the time frame that you can paint so you dont run into problems with paint lifting etc.
