i need to repaint my w900 kenworth, the body is fiberglass, and its had 2 bad paint jobs, 1 is mine, my bigest problem is the tops of the hood fenders and roof are checked, [ little cracks all over that seem to actually be in the fiberglass itself, there are no big cracks or chips out of the body otherwise, what should i use to get a smooth finish, the last time i painted the truck, i sanded it smooth and primered before color but now the checking is back any ideas?

3 clear coated paint jobs without striping. That would be 15 to 25 coats of paint. Once paint checks added coats will check. Strip it down to the polyester, prime with polyester until the glass is buried and refinish normaly. It'll be fine.

Go to some of the fiberglass boat restoration sites. It can be done but a lot of work. If the basis structure is sound but surface is checked you need to grind/sand off all the checking, rebuild the surface with a surfacing compound then sand until smooth. At that point prime and paint with materials of choice. However you should stay with one manufacturer's products. There is no easy fix. Go to the Gougeon Bros website (epoxy and fiberglass suppliers) and get their book. Think it is free. People spend months and years rebuilding a boat hull but that is what is required. Ask me I (unfortunately) know.

sounds like you have stress cracks in the glass, not uncommon on a big hood. whats happening is the panel is flexing and cracking. i would add some fiberglass on the backside yo reinforce it. get glass matte and resin, grind the backside to roughen it up with some 36 grit, hen lay the matte. on the paint side grind down some, add a layer of matte on that side too, then sand and feather the area.
