i found a original set of fenders i striped the paint and primer off, what i ended up with is shiney metal in most places but these black splotchs all over, these splotches seemed to be pitted also. i used must for rust it turned white then i soft wired brushed it and washed it down. they seem to be ok for primer now. My question is are these black spots ready for primer ? or will they bleed rust. Also have some small holes and dents and crinkled metal at the lower ends of the back of the fenders, i was thinking of brazing these is this acceptable. Thanks JR.

Wire wheel it good with a brush on an electric drill or angle grinder, then use the Must For Rust, let it dry, maybe overnight, then sand the area, apply body filler, sand it, you don't need to wash the MFR off. Prime with epoxy primer, then use a sandable surfacer before topcoating. I don't weld, but yes you can braze the holes it if they aren't too bad, you will then have to use body filler. You can also knock out the dents, and use body filler in them, try to get the depressions or rough areas so that you need to use no more than 1/8 inch of filler, I shoot for 1/16 inch.

Hi Jr;

I had some small holes in my fenders as well as some tears. I used a mig welder to weld them up and then ground them down and followed with filler. It came out very well. When welding holes, use a piece of copper to cover the back side of the hole. The welding material will not stick to the copper as you fill the hole and you'll have a good weld. You are replacing steel with steel.

I found that once you braze something, if you need to go back to make repairs using mig you will not be able to clean the brazing material off and will have a very difficult, if not impossible, time trying to mig weld. A good mig welder can be set at a low enough setting to weld fenders.

Just some thoughts, hope they help.
