I have been reading the messages and am now totally confused. I now own a MF 165. I am making some sheetmetal repairs and want to repaint the parts, fenders, light buckets, hood, grille etc..It is a working tractor so I don't need a show-parade tractor paint job. It needs to be durable and and respectable enough that I don't have to cover my face in embarrassment when someone looks at it. All parts are in good shape and very little rust. I will be purchasing 1 new fender.I will not be taking parts down to bare metal. What products do I use?
Thanks Bob

Well Bob the best advice that I can give is, talk to the guys at your local paint store, or wherever you get your paint. They"ll be able to guide you. Painting is an exact science, as stated, the primer has to be compatable with the top coat. Your new fender will probably have a temporary coating which should be sealed, actually if you don"t use the same type of paint as what is already on the rest of the tractor, you will need to seal the whole thing. Most of the older machines used "Alkyd Enamel". To be honest I don"t know if this is available anymore, if it is then use it because it would be the easiest for what you"re describing. Alkyd enamel can be applied with a brush, and will lay out just fine if reduced slightly. That said, you could also go with the latest and greatest coatings available. Self etching primer/sealer and polyurethane enamel. I"d be glad to assist further if you need. Just drop a line.

Alkyd enamel is sold by farm stores such as TSC and Orscheln, etc, and some of the tractor dealers. Case-IH, sells an acrylic modified alkyd enamel. It is still available from PPG, or was recently, probably other paint manufacturers. Likely won't ever die because it is cheap -- it acts cheap, too.

gotta ask a few questions first. 1) what is your painting experience. 2) what is your budget 3) is it a show tractor or a working girl. the farm and fleet type paints are going to be our lowest cost and most forgiving. next, your implement dealer paint will be a higher cost and a little more involved to apply, but the results will be better. last, your automotive urethanes. the most durable, the most expensive, and more complicated in application, and a lot nastyier chemical wise. here are a couple pics, first two are a farmall h hood in martin senyour cross fire urethane with hardener, the last pic is my farmall cub in farm and fleet alkyd enamel

third party image the h parts were shot in a downdraft booth and baked. the cub was shot in the barn.

the rims were galvanized when new. when i paint my rims, i just use plain old rustoleum silver with valspar hardener. that way, when you fix a flat or change a tire, its a lot easier to touch up when you bounce a tire spoon off the rim.

Yes thats right! I always try to use dealer paint and primer on tractors and show piece equipment. Even my "field " tractors have the better paint on them. TSC paint is ok for a plow or other field equipment that will see hard use. Just my 2 cents worth!!!!

Dont use tsc paint. Go to dealer and get their primer and paint. I painted a skidloader. primed with j.d primer and painted with case oriiginal color paint. when using a diff. dealers primer be careful that your paint will work with the primer or it will wrinkle when applied. I used j.d. primer because they had a yellow primer. went well under that burned yellow paint. Gal paint cost me $100.00 but looks brand new up close even. Use paint gun not spray cans.

I painted quite a few tractors with ppg omni, with good results. But the price was getting out of hand. So i tried rustolem with hardener and top coating it with acrylic urethane clear. The first one lives outdoors and has not faded in 3 years.
