Hello all, I am an avid, fairly new member over on the Farmall/IH board. I have a Farmall 504 and it has 16" fronts and 38" rears, cast center and stamped rim.

I have a decent amount of experience painting and I know that to do this correctly I need to REMOVE THE TIRES! But this is not a show finish, just a good looking finish for a working tractor.

How do I mask off front wheels? I have heard you can apply shampoo (cheaper the beter, Suave...) to the tire and let dry then apply again and let dry. Paint the wheel and let cure, then hose the shampoo off.

Second, how to paint a rear rim? I know I have to take the rim off of the center wheel and then paint the rim, but how to mask off the tire it is huge (14.9-38)?

Thanks,
Charles

On tubed, garden tractor rims I've broken the bead loose, tucked the masking(kraft paper) inside the bead, and re-inflated tire, just enough to hold the masking...lets you paint the lip of the rim.

Tire soap.. get it by the pail at napa.. it's thick like grease.. apply it with a paint brush.. paint.. then wash off after cure..

I go all the way around once with masking tape, in short sections you can get very close to the rim and hold a radius pretty well. After that I go back over with newpapers that pretty much cover the rest of the tire. That way I know 110% I won't get paint or drift on the tire. It is probably a little overkill, but after all there is no kill like overkill.

I have heard of putting grease on the tire as well and just washing it off after you get done, didn't work worth a darn.

try that new tape I found that is made for going around corners and bends. It goes around a rim very close. I use the newspaper thing too many times, but I do like the flexible tape.

What I did was go to a body shop and got a windshield box (empty) found a rim the size of the wheel or rim I was going to paint, laid the card board down onto the rim using a soft mallet went around the bead cutting a perfect hole the size of the rim out. Then I used the weather stiping with adhesive backing and placed it around the hole on the cardboad to seal it! I then use those the calking strips rolled into a ball and stick them onto the cardboard several places they stick to the tires and hold the cardboard stencil in place while painting. Works for me!!!

I have found that if you clean the tires thouroughly with laquer thinner you can use a tape I get at Lowe's that is made to go around corners. It will bend very well. Then, depending on the size of the wheel, either use wide tape (3inch) to mask the tire or mask with paper. It is sort of time consuming but comes off easy and keeps the tires clean. There is no real easy way. The most important is the first couple of inches away from the rim. You can clean overspray past that with laquer thinner after you paint.

Get yourself a strip of sheet metal about 3" wide and 96" long. Lay the tire down flat. Run the metal around the rim(up on edge)resting on the tire. Overlap the ends and fasten together. You can pop rivet or use duct tape. You may want to lay a tarp on the tire. Lets you paint entire rim with little or no overspray. Small strips work for front rims also. CalJim

I like the sheet metal "spray shield" over tape and mask any day. Thank you CalJim.

wipe the rubber with laquer thinner or alc and tape the tire with short pieces of tape and paper
