I know that TSC carries Valspar paints. I also heard the JD paint is made by Valspar. Is there any differance between the 2 other than lables?

Also when reducing a paint that you have added hardner to, is there anything i should look at for? Never messed with hardener.

Thanks in advance!

If you are talking about the alkyd enamil at tsc.. I usually mix my naptha witht he hardner, and then add both to the paint, seal.. let activate.. then check to see if i have enough thinner.. then go.. sure it's cheap paint.. but with a little care.. it makes for a decent color besides rust..

Some five years ago or so a Farmer had brought me a hood that he wanted painted. He also brought over some paint. If I recall correctly I believe it was Synthetic enamel.
A company called western makes cheap additives,I have found this product line at various parts hous(ie. carquest).
On the John Deere label they recommend a very minimal reduction in reducers and do not mention a hardener. On the first coat I have used 8 part paint- 1part reducer- 1part hardener. On the second coat after it tacks up if you feel confident with your painting skills drop to a 4part paint- 1part reducer- 1/2part hardener.
Please do not hold me to the type of paint, the manufacture may have changed their type of paint. Reguardless of the paint the mix reciepe will work fine.

I would think that since Valspar is such a large company that they would have a tech line that you could call or have the jobber call to get an answer as to why the JD green instructions do NOT give mention to the addition of any type of catylist (hardner) to their paint. It seems everybody ACCEPT JD and Valspar are telling everybody what to add to this paint to try to improve it. Could it be the liability of doing so or the fact that this paint wasn't ever designed to use a catylist and therefore would be a waste of money? Maybe both?? Don't you think if this paint could be improved with an expensive catylist that JD would be cashing in on the added profits??? Everybody's a chemist.

Valspar is big, I mean huge. Can't know just by the name what the paint flavor is. There is big differences between alkyds within a company.

I am not certain about this, but the TSC paint is likely alkyd enamel, it will fade if left outside. The JD paint may or may not be an acrylic modified alkyd enamel, if so it contains UV inhibitors to slow fading. Follow the labeled insructions for using hardener, you also need a supplied air breathing system if you use it. If there are no instructions, I can't help you as I have not used alkyd enamel.
