I have 5 V8 short blocks on engine stands that I want to spray paint with aerosol cans of high heat engine enamel .

They are spotless , fresh hot vat followed by hot soapy water , blow dried and coated with WD-40

They are in the sealed engine building room and I can heat the room , motors and paint to a constant 80 degrees (?) for 24 hrs prior to painting.

My question is will denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner work to get the WD-40 out of the pours? or is there a better thinner I can get locally ?

I use a lot of xylene in the metal fabrication production but it seems to have an oily residue . Our primer will fish eye if the xylene isn"t completely wiped of the steel , so I"m guessing that"s a no go.

Thanks in Advance - Ken(Ark)

Brake Cleaner should do it.

I would have to agree with Mike M on the braklean especially since I assume you don't want to take them out and steam clean them. It's gonna take a lot of braklean. When you paint , just dust the first two light coats on and let them dry good before you put a wet coat on. WD-40 on castings and paint just ain't gonna get along.

I'd rinse em off with a slower drying solvent than xylene or lacquer. Mineral spirits then water then blow off well.

i use VM&P NAPTHA for all my degreasing and cleaning. or you could also use Denatured Alcohol.

Run them through the vat again to remove the WD 40 and then treat several times with wax and grease remover. PPG 330 or equivalent.

I already have them built . I was going to sell them unpainted but I think I would like to paint them now .

I was not planning on going to the big town for a while so I was wondering if anything at the local hardware store would work .

Thanks for the advice , I'll try it before the next batch of motors - Ken(Ark)

Try the wax and grease remover on a portion of one of the blocks and see if the paint lifts. The product I mentioned is about as good as it gets and is made for that purpose, even though it was designed to remove only residual materials. There is a stronger product by PPG, DX 440, it is not intended for use before painting, but if you used it, washed it off then use 330, that might help. If I was doing it, I would use the 440, then the 330 without washing assuming that I was diluting the 440. If you have a hot water pressure washer, that would help to get into the pores. At worst, take them to a car wash -- anything to get rid of most of the WD 40 before using the wax and grease remover.

I haven't used any high heat paint in a long time and they may have better now. My experience is high heat paint will not stay on good until it get hot. It rubs off easy. Therefore all the handling it takes to put an engine in, the paint would be messed up by putting the engine in.

I would use regular paint. The engine doesn't got to hot for that paint except at a few places like manifold.
