Hello All - I know this question has beat to death, but I need to just paint my hood on my working 8N. I don't have a forced air respirator and I plan to paint outside. What paint should I use and will it be ok if I do not use a hardner? I have been thinking about using either Tisco or NAPA paint. Thanks for your help!

Whatever mask you get make sure it can take the bad chemical that is in hardener. I can't remember the name of it, but if you search other posts you will find it.

I found a nice mask at OSH with the correct type of filter for about $25-30. The cartridges on mine are good for paints, thinners, strippers, organic vapors and the bad stuff in hardener. I got one of those disposable tyvex suits which covered me up completely. I got about 8 spray sessions out of it.

Just use common sense.

There are NO cartridge masks that will protect you from the isocyanates in hardeners, unless you have a downdraft paint booth with a way to monitor the vapors, along with a way to determine if your cartridges are performing properly. If you read the fine print in the instructions with your mask, I believe you will find that it is not designed for iso's. This has been beat to death on this forum, many posts in the archives. Hobbiests do not have that type of booth, or any booth at all for the most part. Supplied air is the only safe way.

if its a working tractor and not a show queen, the tisco should be fine, i would use hardner, i think you will be happier. you are spraying outside, so your exposure will be a lot less than shooting inside. pick up a good disposable charcoal respirator, napa has em for about 30 dollars, wear long sleeve shirt, disposable gloves and a pair of saftey glasses. just use common sense. the tisco, farm and fleet lines arent as nasty as the automotive lines, altho not quite as durable, but the cost is much lower.

My $.02 worth. If it is a show tractor, definitely paint it with the cheap TSC stuff or the like. It will look real nice and like it did when it came from the factory. If you paint it with the expensive automotive paint, your tractor will not look like it did from the factory. They didn't have that wet look 1 foot deep shine back then.
