Hello all,

Fixing up an old steel frame utility trailer. Outside frame still have some paint with patchy rust. Inside frame fair with deep corrosion where floor was bolted down, but still sound. power brushing it all with a 6in coarse cup brush. Trying to get all the scale.

After reading about it here on the forum, I went and bought some Right Stuff De-ruster. Never used this stuff before in my life.

Questions...I brushed this stuff on. Wants to turn the rust black or grey. I guess that is good. Now some gets on the existing paint and leaves a residue.

Do I wash it off the paint with water? or just leave it on?

What about where I treated the metal? Will it hurt to get water on the metal I just treated? or should I wash the treated metal down before priming?

Any other prep after applying de-ruster before priming?

thanks for the help.

Randy

I tried the must for rust and wasn't impressed. I have found another thing from HD to work better. It is a rust nuetrilizer and an etcher so the paint will stick better. So far it seems to work great and the instructions even say to rinse it off, so I guess a little bit of water won't hurt anything. Just an idea.

Hello CNKS

I will get some of this must for rust stuff and use it. the De_ruster product has lousy documentation.

Must for rust at least provides decent application info on there website.

Thanks

Randy

One important thing I forgot to mention. Must For Rust and Picklex 20 I consider to be protectants against rust on bare metal that you can't paint right away. That is why you don't wash them off. They are also "mild" rust converters that should work on the remaining rust you have after wire wheeling. I don't believe they are effective on heavy rust, such as what POR 15, etc is used for. I will use them on rust that I cannot get to mechanically on parts I do not wish to sandblast. I have not seen your trailer, but by your description, Must For Rust should work fine on that.

I have used Picklex 20 and Must for Rust, which I bought at Home Depot. Must For Rust is a fraction of the cost of Picklex, they seem to work the same. I have not used The Right Stuff, so my answers apply to the other two. Do what the instructions say if they differ from what I am about to say. If you use water on the paint, dry it off. Don't get any water on the other surfaces, you will lose the rust protection, it must be kept dry. Remove as much of the residue as you can with a scotchbrite pad before painting. Use wax and grease remover immediately before painting. The black you see is the converted rust. The grey or white is mostly a reaction of the converter with contaminants in the surface of the metal. The cleaner the metal the less white -- I don't know how important that is. I don't know how large your trailer is, but I would remove all the old paint. Otherwise the old paint will be very visible under the new. You can feather the old paint and leave it on, but it is simpler to just chemically strip it or sand it off.
