Has anyone used the dealer paint Red IH 2150 Paint with/without hardner? and what kind of primer did you use? is this a good paint to use? I am repainting a Super A and have stripped off the paint using paint stripper and a wire brush in a grinder and drill, I am going to clean the metal with Laquer thinner. I have not painted yet but just in the process of cleaning and need some advice? The tractor will be used some and will be keep in my shop most of the time and maybe taken to the local tractor show from time to time. I wanted a decent paint job that will last and not fade to bad without spending an arm and a leg? :) any advice would be helpful?

Thanks,JW

i use 2150 paint with napa 576 gloss plus hardener. this is also my primer. if the sheet metal is a little pitted i paint three or four coats with this mixture and i will sand when dry then finish paint useing the same economical paint with no worry of compatibility problems. and no different color showing when you get a scratch.

Clean the metal with wax and grease remover and use epoxy primer. If you use hardener you need a supplied air system, not a charcoal mask, for respiratory protection. Use a charcoal mask at your own risk. 2150 is ok for the purpose you have described.

What kind/brand of Primer do I need to use? I am not sold on the hardener? but what would brand would I need if I decided to us it? and how would I mix it? and is it worth using to help fading over the years? Sorry for all the questions but I am trying to figure out which way to go. Thanks for the help, I have just decovered this web site and so far have found a lot of good info!
Thanks,JW44

I use PPG MP170 epoxy. I don't mix brands of paint and brands of hardener, some do and seem to get away with it. I would use the hardener that Case-IH sells, the dealer can order it if he doesn't have it. Far as I'm concerned parts people know absolutely nothing about paint, so don't let them tell you it doesn't exist. Hardener makes the paint flow out better, and gives a higher gloss, plus it makes the paint more durable. It does not prevent or slow fading. But you need a supplied air system to safely use it. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. 2150 is supposed to be an "acrylic modified" alkyd enamel, unlike the 70+ year old alkyd enamels that farm stores sell it contains UV inhibitors which slow fading. I use PPG paint partly because PPG has spec sheets that tells you exactly how to use it. The major paint manufacturers all have those sheets available on their web sites. Good luck finding one specifically for 2150. Although 2150's manufactuer, Valspar, should have a web site with instructions for acrylic modified alkyd enamel, I have not looked at it.

I painted my H with IH 2150 with no hardner. This photo was taken about 4 years after the paint job and I think it still looks pretty good (for an amateur painter). It is shedded every night though. Larry

I think I used about a gallon and a quart using a gravity feed gun. One of them HVLP guns probably wouldn't have used quite as much paint - or turned so many things a nice red tint in the garage!!! Larry

I painted my M with it, it's not a show tractor I use it all the time and it sits outside. I didn't use a hardener on it, but I will next time. You can get the hardener at the IH or JD dealer they use the same brand of paint.
