I had severe flaking rust on patches of salvaged iron I-beams which I'm using to construct 2 bridges.I bought some expensive converter made of tannic acid and some "polymer".Before using it I found some much cheaper "right stuff" rust converter utilizing phosphoric acid at 25% the cost. So I used the cheaper first. Scraped the beams and it went on with a brush like water. A day or so later it went from dark brown to a powdery white color. I want to go over the beams now with a coat of the expensive tannic acid solution but I'm not sure of the wisdom. Has anyone had any experience with this? I would like, ultimately, to paint the beams.

Almost 10 years ago, I bought a water tank that was on a trailer made from a truck frame/rear axle. I used a angle grinder w/ wire brush, dusted it off with a paintbrush, and gave it two coats (brush) of rustoleum. It has never been inside and looks just as good as it did when I painted it. Sometimes we put too much stock in the expensive stuff.

My .02.
Good Luck,

Dave
