how to transfer paint into mixing cup?

What to use to transfer paint and reducer from gallon cans into mixing cups?

I'm using a 30-cc glass syringe, works good, easy cleanup, no mess, but tedious for volumes over say 10 oz.

I don't like to pour out of those gallon paint containers, what a mess and waste. Any ideas?
thanks, Jim

you can buy lids from any body shop paint supplier. here the ones we use at the shop. they run about 20 dollars for the one gallon ones. they have an agitator then runs down the center of the lid that hooks up to our mixing system, however you can attach a cordless drill to it and premix the paint before you pour it. the lid has a thumb operated trap door that keeps the can sealed and makes it easy to pour with no mess.

Punch a few holes at the lid grove so paint drains back into can. Wrap 2" masking tape above top of can. Distort tape while pouring into cup.

CNKS suggestion is a good one. For gallon cans they do make a clip on pouring lip that works very well. Though made for house type paints, it will work for automotive paints too. I would not leave the paint on it too long though. Just wipe it off and save it for the next time. If you need to replace it, they are cheap. You can get one at a local paint store or Home Depot.

I bought some of those at Home Depot, and they would not seal on my PPG gallon cans. Found some at Walmart--the first few I bought were ok, the next ones were junk, but consider the source. I like the looks of Glennsters, but don't want to pay $20, but they might be worth it.

You can buy metal dippers at grocery stores, etc. Don't buy plastic. There are also lids with spouts in them -- I have never had much success with those.

Why not plastic? That is what I use. Dried paint peels off easy. I use the white ones not the clear.

I have tried plastic measuring cups, leave the mixed paint in for a while and the bottom dissolves, probably ok if you use the paint immediately.

You got the stiff polystyrene ones then. The white felexable are most likely polypropylene which paint will not affect. Same material plastic paint pails are made of.
