last week ya'll helped me on my equipment set-up.

Painted 2N 3-piece axle yesterday. After 28 hrs dry time, paint feels like enamel at this stage, dry, but not hard. if it were enamel, I'd give it 3 weeks to get that "hard" feel.

I suspect I painted too thick. here's sequence:

MP170/MP175 2:1 mix in cup provided by dealer.

one coat, 2.5 hours dry time at 75F, 17% humidity. No problems here.

MTK, MR186 reducer, MH168 hardener, 4:1:1.

three wet coats, 12 oz total, 82F, 5 minutes between coats.

No runs evident after final coat, but 2 runs after 28 hours.

Did I spray too thick? My thought for next time is same procedure, but stop at 2 coats.

thanks, Jim

Appreciate your sharing of this process with the rest of us 'first timers". You're inspiring me to ry it myself.

Now if it wasn't 40 and 95% humidity in MI today..

thanks CNKS and Glen; ok, I'll apply lighter and move the gun faster next time, but keep three coats.

The MTK instructions state ready for 'polishing' after 16-hrs dry time, my paint is much too soft to polish after a day dry time; CNKS your experience appears similar. I'm ok with that, just learning here.

I worked around auto dealer body shops many years ago, as I recall they would send the car out the door only one day after spraying, I assumed MTK was formulated for similar mass-production work.

Times are just a guidline. Everybody sprays differently. Give it at LEAST 10 min before second coat and 15-20 min before third. Sounds like each coat is "re-flowing" the prior one and it is "letting go".

Polish, maybe so; anything more agressive, no.

You will see runs, sags, immediately. Sometimes they are hard to see but they are there. It is hard to keep the gun at a uniform distance distance when spraying around curves, etc, that may be where you got the runs. My experience with MTK indicates that it will run, but you have to get the gun too close or move it too slow. You probably have it too thick, 5 minutes between coats is a little short, best twice that much. I have color sanded and buffed MTK the next day, but I should have waited at least another day, meaning it does not harden immediately, and is not gas resistant, etc for a least a couple of weeks, or longer in my opinion, meaning you need to be careful with it. Sand out the runs with 400, sand the whole thing with 400 or use a maroon scotchbrite pad and give it another coat. MTK will cover in 2 coats, but I use 3 to be sure I have coverage. You have to be a pretty good painter to get everything covered in 2 coats. Move your gun a little faster, and increase the time between coats to at least 10 minutes.

jr; The flash time is 5 to 10 minutes between coats. It's recommended you be liberal on the time, say 10 minutes. Sounds like possibly too heavy of a coat as well. I'd try more flash time and thinner coats.
