Is there any to keep a 1/2 gallon of paint fresh for long storage? I just painted my tractor and have paint left over I may need again. Stan

Make sure the lid is on securely and turn the can upside down. Put it on the shelf. Turning upside down seals the lid from any oxygen entering the can through the lid.

Buy a 2 qt. can or 2-1qt. cans and fill them to 1/4" from the top.

Simplest thing to do is to shake it good occasionally and keep it sealed good -- it should last several years. I use a product called Bloxygen out of an aerosol can to extend the shelf life of hardeners. It is also supposed to keep the film from forming. Certain welding gases (I don't weld) are supposed to work, also. I sometimes simply invert the can, if I can remember to do it.

I painted my 1952 Chevy light blue in 1957. The left over paint was stored in an unheated building upside down. My daughter wanted her pedal car painted in around 1962. I opened the can and the paint was still good. About 1/8 of a gallon. Just enough to paint her car. Freezing did not appear to damage the paint any.
I had a full gallon of orange paint in my unheated shed winter before this and the freezing didn't appear to hurt that paint either. I wish I would have known how bad the freezing was to paint and I would not have let it freeze. I might have had better luck.

The paint on this one set out in the unheated shed also. It had to be the frozen paint or maybe it was my 30 dollar HVLP paint gun. I guess no mater how much I read I will never learn. I know 70 year old men should just set in a rocking chair and let the young fellows do it right.

I had a inverted can with about 1/4 left. I had it on my bench. When the sun hit it it expanded and pushed the top off. This was yesterday, quiote a mess. I usually keep it in a closed area, but had it out to see if I could use it. stan

Depending on what type of paint it is, for some you can pour about 1/4 inch of thinner on the top and store. The thinner keeps it from forming a skin on top of the paint. Once open however, the shelf life is only about one year for most paints.

put a piece of saran wrap on top of the paint before putting the lid on. limits the amount of air that gets to the paint

Keep it somewhere so it won't freeze. Hope you didn't put paint hardener in the paint you have left over. Hal
