I plan on doing some painting and hav ea question. While I know that you have to scrape, then prime, then paint, Is there a check for wood mositure to use BEFORE I start using the brush?

I heard that you can buy mositure testers, but is that necessary? thanks

I know of no specific tests other than a moisture meter or directly cutting into the wood, which you certainly don't want to do. You can however get an idea by feeling the wood. If there is too much moisture you'll feel it. But, for house painting this is not reliable. You can however, look at your environmental conditions and make a judgment as to whether moisture may be present. Consider the recent weather, exposure to rain, snow or fog. How long has it been since it rained; is the area to be painted shaded or consistently exposed to sunlight? If the wood has been exposed to rain and is unpainted it may take a few weeks of warm weather for the wood to dry. Shaded areas may take longer. Plan your painting for the warm dry season. Your best option to to go to your local house paint store and talk to the experts in your area. They could give you the best advice based on their local experience.
