I went on a 100 mile round trip looking for some paint. Red like paint for my Case 1958 311 tractor. Found it for 168.00 plus tax at a Napa dealer and just was way out of line in cost for me to deal with this day. So went on doing a circle back to my home and stopped in next town at a family Center and found this paint. Industrial enamel , tractor equiptment. Van Sickle company in Lincoln Neb. For a cost of only $29.00 for gallon of paint and clear hardner pint can for only $25.99 and some thinner for 8.00 for gallon of it. Making the total cost of all this only around $63.00 plus tax. Saving me almost $100.00 !
Had I reverse my circle trip and gone the other way around. I would have traveled only 12 miles. shesssss sssss lol Oh well wife said go the other way and I did not want to. lol She told me later.." I told you so" then laughed.
" So tell me what do you think of this gallon of paint ? " Is Vance a good one?

Thanks... rain is a problem right now. in reply to Larry59, 04-03-2008 19:13:29
I apperiate your comments. Gives me more thoughts and what I should do next. Have the main frame and engine all ready to paint soon. Worked my bu## off cleaning oil and grease off. Wasking it with soap to get fine oil off. Still have a couple of places I will sand on it.
I don't have a garage to paint it in. So it will be done outside when weather permits. Just keep getting rain it seems every other day right now.

Prep is the key with any paint. A good example i painted an oliver oc4 crawler. stripped and painted it with $30/gallon w/ hardner. It"s been used and at shows. It has been super resilient to scratches and durable. Does need a coat of wax every once in awhile to really make it pop. My freind is a professional painter and prep is 95% of the battle with any paint.

Van Sickle will fade in a years time if left outside. You would have been much better off with NAPA. Not to put you down, but I have never heard anything good about Van Sickle. You get what you pay for. Remember you need supplied air for the hardener, or else don't use it.

larry, for the cost involved, you can get satisfactory results form the industrial enamels. you will not get a high quality automotive type finish, but....you are not painting a show car either. the key to any paint job is preparation!!! take your time, do the best job you can. the tricky part with the alkyds are when you add the thinner to reduce it. generally up to 10 % is the reduction rate. just a little too much and the paint gets real thin, real fast.lay down a light first coat (tack coat), then come back with 1-2 more coats. let it tack well between coats. the final coat, apply it heavy, but not enough to make it run, it will dry to a good shine. practice on a scrap piece of something first.
