Plan on painting a running Ford 172 CI engine this summer. It is an industrial engine which is painted original orange/red. Plan on painting blue. Question is; Has anyone tried using crushed walnut shells as a surface prep? My thoughts are this media would clean and prepare surface enough that I could shoot it with epoxy then the final paint. Comments appreciated. Sam

Blasting with any media is more a question of the tool rather than the media. And this is not to mention taping off any hole with duct tape or foil tape (little more money but sticks better). Rope and tape around crank (hand scraping paint left from taping).

Me, I have used sand, if motor is completly together and must have done VERY good tape job at crank and any openings. Walnut shells just take longer and more media and can be just distuctive if not prep right.

Also used paint stripper. Home Depot sells one, about 100.00 for 5 gal pail and works great and yes they sell 1 gal also. Don't remember the name, just remember the 100.00 for 5 gal.

I have an 1841 Ind. that I will be doing soon, good luck.
