I bought a 1969 farmall 140 that was painted blue. It has, as near as I can tell, 3 coats of paint. The second coat is pealing. I want to return the tractor back to the original red, but I need to remove the old paint first. The tractor was used inside its whole life so there is no rust and for the fact I hate to sandblast it. Is there a quick effective way to strip the paint without disassembling the tractor? I already have the sheet metal is already off but I really don't want to go any farther if I don't have to. What will the stripper do to he gaskets and seals it contacts? What extra prep work will need to be done? Any and all help is appreciated.

Oven cleaner, the type that contains sodium hydroxide (lye), followed by pressure washing will remove the grease and dirt, and a a lot, but not all of the paint. Automotive paint strippers can be used, not sure what they do to seals and gaskets, and have heard that if it gets hung up in the nooks and crannies that it will lift the new paint. Oven cleaner followed by pressure washing, followed by an assortment of wire brushes will do the trick but it will take awhile.

There is a guy on the JD board that coincidentally has the same first name as mine. Calls himself Frank in Tallahasee. He has developed a paint stripper that uses lye as it's main ingredient. I haven't used it myself but I've read some good reports about it. Holler at him in the JD board and he'll tell you what you need. By the way I've never seen a Farmall that got so cold it turned blue. LOL
Hope this helps
