Ford 2N wheels are in the shop to be sandblasted and rust holes to be patched with welded plate. The weld repairs will be adjacent to the tire tubes.

Can I coat this area with PPG MP170 epoxy and overlay with "rubberized" auto body undercoating? intent is to provide a cushion for the tubes rubbing on pitted and welded wheels.

Is a color coat required over the epoxy primer for this application? thanks for your replies, Jim

You could use some truck bed liner paint on them to stop the rust and smooth things out.It works great.

I've been brush painting ZeroRust on the inside of rims, as well as most other "interior" surfaces and components, such as brackets, radiator, inside of dash housing, etc. Not only does it save time and the "good" primer and paint, it's often considerably easier to get rust protection into nooks and crannies with a brush. I just spray the surfaces you can see with the good stuff.

Topcoating MP170 on the inside of the rims is not necessary.

for the inside of the rims, i use por-15 rust conversion primer, apply 2 coats with a brush, dries hard as nails, and slicker than owl poop. if you load tires with chloridde, and it leaks, it wll not affect the por-15. 35.00 a quart.
