So im getting ready to paint my J.D. one bottom pull type plow. I've got it completely dissasembled and sand blasted down to bare metal. My question is do I really need to spray everything with primer first? Im not looking for expo quality here. I just want it to look nice and it will probly never get used. Im not looking to take short cuts, its just that I'm finding out paint, primer and etc. are very expensive. Also I dont want to have to buy another gun just for spraying primer. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Must be an old #51 eh?. Got one myself. Like CNKS said below. You need some sort of primer. Primer has corrosion resistance and acts as the "glue" that binds the paint to bare metal. If on a budget then skip the hardner but not the primer. You will have the blast profile to fill so use two coats of primer and two paint and should be good to go. (or park or whatever)Probably look so good someone will want to buy it from ya.

Yep, sure is a #51. This is my first restoration attempt so I thought id start small. lol. I'll skip the hardener and put on 2 coats of primer. I've been digging in the archives for info. Thanks for your help.

I plan on using John Deere paint...I believe it is acrylic enamel. I will be using hardener also.

JD paint is alkyd enamel, use JD primer if you want to do it cheap. You don't need another gun, just clean out the one you have. Skip the hardener on a plow, it is not necessay and dangerous if you don't have supplied air. You can use the JD paint with a $30 charcoal mask.
