Ok so I have some painting experience. But not much. I have a ok HVLP gun. I have been priming some sheet metal. When I spray the gun sort of like spits the paint, it sprays good but the finish is sort of lumpy / spitty, dotty. What could be wrong, There are several adjustments on the gun, could it just be the gun, What you guys think? thanks

HVLP's won't give the even finish of the standard gun. You can try more reducer or more air. If by spitting you mean paint is intermittent, the needle packing behind the head needs tightening. It's siphoning air into the fluid nozzle.

Ditto what the others said. If you are not use dto hvlp.. and just came from a pressure gun.. or a syphon gun.. they take a bit to get used to.. especially when reducing.. hard to get reducer right when you are used to a syphon gun.

if you check the gun like cnks said, and it still doesnt help, could be the primer isnt reduced enough, or , the primer isnt mixed enough and the paint is clumpy. try running the primer thru a strainer before you load the gun.

Sometimes they just need a good cleaning, sometimes they need a kit put it. Disassemble, clean, and try again. Could be as simple as a loose connection somewhere. Unless you want to spend a lot of time with pattern size, etc, Set at full pattern, fluid flow about 1/2 turn from wide open, same for air. This is a permanent adjustment, set it like that every time. If you want a smaller pattern, get a touch up gun.
