Hi! We are in the middle of doing a mechanical restoration and cosmetic clean up on our 1959 Fordson Dexta and are having all the sheet metal dipped in a paint and rust removal cleaning solution same process as a company that is NATION WIDE called Redi Strip you wont get a cleaner or better job done on the sheet metal and no warpage either! and if you are totally disassembling the cast pieces as well, they can do that also including the engine block and head. We are only doing the sheet metal on ours and we will have about $150.00 into the cleaning. This is just another thought for all of you out there looking for a way to do the job better Bye!

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ELECTROLYSIS, OR SOME TYPE OF ACID BATH?

I belive it is an electrolysis process. I have used their services before and most of the time they do a very good job. It doesn't work well in real tight corners or where sheet metal is bent doubled like at edges of hoods and fenders. There is little or no residue left on the parts and all you have to do is wash them well with solvent and prime them. Beats sand blasting by a long ways.

IF IT IS AN ELECTROLYSIS PROCESS, JUST THOUGHT I WOULD LET YOU KNOW, IT IS VERY, VERY INEXPENSIVE TO SET UP YOUR OWN. A PLASTIC BARREL, ARM AND HAMMER WASHING SODA, BATTERY CHARGER AND SOME PIECES OF SCRAP METAL. I HAVE BEEN CLEANING PARTS AND IT WORKS. ANYTHING YOU CAN FIT INTO THE BARREL WILL WORK.

Lewis, this sounds good. However, can you give more detail as to how much water, Arm and Hammer, how much metal and how long to leave it in the mixture?

Hi David,
(1) 1 tablespoon of "Arm & Hammer" washing powder per gallon of water, (2) The more scrap metal "anodes" the better it will work. The experts even suggest totally enclosing the part to be cleaned with the scrap with something like "expanded metal"; but here again, the part to be cleaned "cathode" cannot touch the scrap metal "anodes". (3) Length of time will vary-how rusty the part is, how much amperage you have available. You cannot damage anything by leaving the part in too long. If the part is not as clean as you like, put it back in. Hope this helps.

What is Washing Soda? I can find A&M Baking Soda and Washing Detergent but not washing soda. Any suggestions on where to find the soda?

Hi Curt, Yes, Arm & Hammer WASHING SODA, not baking soda. I get mine at the local Alberstons store. For one reason or another, Wal-Mart doesnt carry it. The way I found out where to get it was by calling the Arm $ Hammer company directly and they told me which stores have it. Their phone number is on any box of their product. I have used the battery charger/ washing soda trick on a lot of smaller parts, and it works OK, but a slow process. Steve T
