How do you keep parts from rusting before you get them painted?

I am starting to restore a Farmall A and am doing a lot of mechanical work first. As I take things apart I want to get them cleaned off good. How do you keep them from rusting? It will be a good year before I get around to final painting. I was thinking of using primer from a spray can to protect the parts. This would mainly be used on the cast iron housings, engine block and stuff not the sheet metal. Do you guys see any problems with this idea? Is there a better approach? Everything is kept inside my shop but with summer humidity things can get damp and I don't want any surface rust to start.

Use a primer paint as soon as possible- if you sandblast, it should be done immediately- even sitting overnight, the rust will start.

I have the same situation as you except my tractor is a C. There is a product called Rass o' Nil. Do a search, or I think it is available from www.autobodystore.com. It is a rust converter that I think can be sprayed (comes in squirt bottles) on and will last until you paint. I have some but haven't used it yet. Be sure you are sitting down when you see the price!

This is what I'm doing - Picklex20 until I'm ready to paint. If you try to prime and then wait, with some of the new 2-part coatings you may be asking for more work. Some of the primers have to have the topcoat applied within 3 days or so or you have to sand and recoat. That's just asking for work you don't need to do. Parts coated with Picklex20, or some of the other rust treatments for that matter, will hold the parts almost indefinately as long as they don't get wet (rained on).
