Paint Q

Hi folks, I'm painting my mm 670. I've painted before using central tractor paint (no hardener added), and am dissapointed - faded out in a year, and not much shine. BTW, I'm a cabinet maker and spray (wood) quite often. I'm not willing to spend for auto paint. I've come up with an alternative (I think). My local Sherwin Williams store recommends their "steel-master 9500", which has of all things silicone added for flexability. It's part of their "industrial coatings" lineShe says she doesn't know anything adding hardeners. Can hardener be added to this paint? Synthetic or acrylic, or what? What do you folks think about this paint option? Thanks, Scott

Don, Thanks for the reply. Yes, nothing will substitute for good preparation! I spend hours upon hours sanding and a few minutes spraying. Also, I don't want to use an inferior product. However, I don't feel I need the fanciest product either. Unless I'm missing the boat on this one, what I'm wanting is a high gloss, color retention smooth finish that doesn't crack, chip, fade or peel early. Do those requirements necessitate I use auto paint? Is what I'm thinking of using (SW industrial Steel-Master) an inferior or a satisfactory coating? Can a hardener be added? If so, what? Thanks, Scott

If you don't want it to "crack, chip, fade, or peel early", the answer to your first question is yes. I know nothing about the paint you are referring to. You might contact the company who makes the paint, or perhaps they have a web site. This is something you can't shortcut or you won't be happy.

Thanks for the reply CNKS. Here's what I've found from the mfgr. Also, I looked at the data sheet. The only thing I saw in the data sheet that appeared to be a problem was max humidity to shoot was 85%. Have to pick my day.

I put to much time and effert into my projects,I sure am not going to skimp on paint quality.....no way....Getting a tractor ready to paint is a lot of work....you can't cover up slopy preperation with paint...if I do it, I do it right and that includes the quality of all the materals....

I'm eating a bit of crow this morning, but my tractor looks nice. As it turns out, the paint my SW dealer was recommending couldn't be mixed in that color for exterior. It would fade too fast according to the factory. So, I ponied up the big bucks and bought acrylic enamel auto paint from NAPA. $54/qt plus hardener and reducer hurt until I see the shine, kinda like novacane the dentist uses. Thanks for the input from the guys. Scott
