Mark, there are a lot of variables to painting in cold weather, the first being runs, the second being dirt. You can actually paint down in the high 50s but your chance of a run(s) is greatly increased & due to the very long time required between coats dirt becomes a big issue. I have tried to paint in cold weather I have found (at least for me) that anything below 70* is a waste of my time & a waste of good paint. I have had a few good paint jobs in 60* weather but that is the exception not the rule.

One of the things to watch for when painting in colder weather is the lack of humidity. You may think that you need a faster reducer because of the cold; but the opposite may be true. Temperature, humidity and air flow all affect evaporation. The slower the reducer; the flatter the paint will have a chance to sit; up to the point where the speed is too slow and runs occur. Too fast and you'll get orange peel. You can always wet sand and try again.

My paint store guy says not to paint anything below 60 degrees or you'll end up with a dull finish. On primer, that's not so much of a problem, but on topcoat, it's a bummer.

I'm gettting ready to move from painting in the breezeway of the barn to inside the shop where I don't have to heat as much space. Fortunately, I'm far enough along on my restoration that I can roll the tractor out of the shop. Heat is your best friend when painting in the cooler weather.

Most paint cans have that info on the label to get the best results.
