Started rebuilding my 420C and have the carburetor off for carb kit and decided to paint before re-installing. I cleaned and stripped with oven cleaner, followed by primer coat and by several light coats of enamel paint. I see others mention applying clear coat as last step. Can anyone tell me what this is for and when is it necessary?

Clearcoat offers uv protection as well as some scratch resistance. It will also put a lovely glossy finish on the enamel. Just be sure that the enamel is compatible with the clearcoat, it might bubble up when you overspray it. You will need to be careful when spraying clearcoat since it is hard to see it is easy to get slides & runs, or maybe I should have been wearing my glasses.
