Plugging Hood Holes

I am doing an engine conversion on a Oliver tractor and had to make another hole in the hood to let the air breather come out of, leaving a 4 inch hole in the hood that I would like to cover up and paint over. I could put some sheet metal in the hole and weld it shut but I have seen some of these hole plugs that snap into a hood hole that look real good. I have not seen any that are 4 inches round though. Anyone got any suggestions on where to look for a plug for the hood holes????

I think I will try the local airport and see what I can find around their shop, at least that gives me a direction. Thanks again....

Sounds like what you want is an "inspection hole cover" used on light aircraft to cover holes in the skin thru which airframe inspections are accomplished.

Big Fred, are you both an aviation enthusiast AND a tractor nut? I am, and someday, I hope to use my old tractor to mow a grass airstrip next to the house. Have to buy the land and get/build an airplane first (details, details). Someday, Lord willing, that dream will become reality!

I had bought an unfinished Pietenpol Aircamper (1932 homebuilt design, used a Ford Model A engine) from a fellow back in about 1986 and was going finish it and get my license, but ended up selling it when I got married. Flying takes a lot of money, and new regulations in the mid-80's were making it more of a hassle than it was worth. Still like planes, though. Good luck on the airstrip, land, and plane.

Where can you get something like that big fred???? The ones I have seen have like little teeth on the back side that hold to the edge of the hole.

Shep: I had 3 Pipers and the inspection plates had a strip of springy medal 3/4 inch wide center riveted to back side to hold it on. The plate was slightly curved like a bowl or saucer and could be snaped bowed in for instalation and then snaped out. Simple once seen and used. They would hold in place fairly well. About 4 or 5 inches wide. Most and small aircraft repair shop should be able to help. ralph

Well, my first thought was Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Co, but I couldn't find anything on their website. You might give 'em a try, though, see link for website. A warning, though, airplane parts can be pricey, even worse than JD parts.
