Has anyone any experience of using two pack etch primer over a rust treatment? (the kind that goes on white and turns to a black coating) I used some etch on the aluminium parts (yes, I am form the UK hence the spelling) and wonder if it would do any harm/good to paint it over the rust treatment as it seems to have a sheen finish that may not be the greatest for paint adhesion? The etch seems to take the sheen off which seems useful.

Also does etch do any good over old paint or is it only worthwhile on bare, smooth metal, or aluminium?

I would skuff the rust treatment or old paint with some sand paper or a red scotch bright pad. I like to use Dupont 615 mixed with 620 hardner 1:1. You can paint over old paint, the only problem may be the old paint may blister or lift from the self etching primer. The self etching primer will promote adhesion to the old paint, seal it and provide a uniform cover over the old paint which will be easier to cover with the top coat. A trick I use, give it a light coat of 615+620, then 1 or 2 coats of 615+620 to cover it. As soon as it is dry apply the top coats. This saves lots of work. If the 615+620 comes out looking like it needs to be thinned or looks a little rough, just add a little more hardner. If the 615+620 looks a little rough after it drys, just sand it lightly with some 400 sand paper. If you want the ultimate finish, 3 coats of 615+620, 3 coats or more of Glaserite primer (this primer can fill things ) then top coat or wait for the next day , sand the glaserite primer then top coat.
