I am a vary novice painter but I did restore my old ford 671 recently. I used the Ford New Holland Acrylic Enamel from FNH. I used Dupont reducer and hardner from the local auto paint store. The results were very pleasing. My question is; Can one use a clear coat over any enamel paint? The experts tell me that the clear coat must be matched to the paint used. But they told me the same as to the use of reducers and hardners. Also; Can hardners be used with paints that do not specifically state "Acrylic" on the container? Thanks, Sam

I believe that Dupont does not recomend clear coat over paint with hardener.

Sam,
Although it is best to use the manufacturers specific hardeners and reducers, as you found out most of the time they do "mix and match" very well with other brands as long as they are quality products.

Yes you need to use a clear designed for acrylic enamel. The problem isn't with the clear itself but rather than the binder used in mixing the color. The clear uses a different binder and it is not compatable with the binder used in the color coat. It can "curdle" as we call it sometimes. When getting an acrylic color mixed and you want to clear it be sure to tell the paint supplier you entend to clear it he can mix the color with a compatable binder for use with clear.

As far as activating synthetic enamel, there once was a product called "Fast Cat" that was used to catalyze such paints but with the newer VOC requirements, such paint is quickly becoming "extinct".

All the old style paints are still available. Incompatibilities and lifting caused by topcoating is purely a symptom of strong or "hot" solvents being used over something that is not resistant to them. If properly catalyzed all acrylic enamels can be cleared. Paint companies don't like when you uses competitors products in conjunction with theirs for multiple reasons. First.. they're not getting all the business and next but most important: if they have not tested these combinations of systems in their labs they can not guarantee predictable results. The auto paint industry is very scientific. In most cases you can combine companies products. The companies just won't stand behind their warrantee if you you do this and have a problem. Check out my web site below. We have a great reputation in this industry. Ask around.
