I hear people talk of this, what is it? How do I do it and should i have it on my tractor?

In addition to what Jerry said, in the base coat-clear coat system that is used on modern cars, you HAVE to use clear coat. Single stage paints can be clear coated, but don't have to be. Since you are a novice painter like me, you should keep it simple until you gain experience. Also follow the instructions on the paint can exactly.

Cleear coat is just a clear paint put over the top of the base color to bring out the shine. The base colors do not have any gloss what so ever but only provide color. The clear is the shine.

Do you need it? No. Do you want it? I can't say. I guess the correct answer is: yes, no, maybe.
