I recently had a Farmall H sandblasted. It's now been a month and I haven't been able to find the time to put on the primer. The tractor looks like it is trying to rust. What do I need to do to get it back to where I can apply the primer?

No need to worry.

Contact POR 15 Company and get a gallon of the Metal Ready zinc phosphate solution. Spray it on with a standard household windex type of spray bottle. Also, soak a rag in it and blot it on in hard to reach places. It will convert your rust to metal and buy you some time because you can then spray the primer over it. It is a mild acid etching solution and neutralizes the rust because rust has 2 positive ions and zinc phosphate has two negative ions. When coming in contact, they balance each other out or neutralize the oxide forming on your negative ion iron. Remember RUST NEVER SLEEPS! You can bury it under a fresh blanket of primer, but it will work on the metal underneath the primer and paint and guess what? in a few years? rust and flaking paint and a worst rust problem will result than when your good efforts were intended to fix.

In the same amount of time you will spend applying metal preparation chemicals, you could apply the primer instead. I recommend a good qaulity self-etching primer like Dupont's Vari-Prime or the Nason version (sold by Dupont also).

Two good coats and your metal is covered with the primer just like it will have to be prior to using the primer-filler. Just keep it dry afterwards and you will be in good shape.

There is a rust converter called Rass O' Nil. Contains phosphoric acid plus zinc. I think it is sold by www.toolwarehouse.com -- If that's the wrong address do a search for the product and you will find it. Stuff is expensive, about $30 a pint, but a little goes a long way. Comes in squirt bottles, squirt it on and move it around with a brush. It will protect bare metal a long time without painting, just keep the tractor inside. You might wirebrush your tractor first. Just follow the directions on the bottle, very easy to use. Apply it, and scuff it some before painting. Unlike metalprep you do not wash it off. I have some and am using it for the 1st time. Try it you will like it. Hope this helps.

Got my web sites mixed up. The correct address is www.autobodystore.com. Think it's under body on the main menu, then chemicals and coatings. I think they changed the name to Picklex20. Same stuff.
