I have a fender that needs work. It has a 6" radius that I've pounded out and now is real close to the original shape, and now should only require a very shallow polyester fill. What kind of sander do I need to ask for with this type of work.

Use a "cheese grater" type of file without the supporting handle so you can easily follow the curvature. Do this as soon as it begins to set up so the filings come up through the file just like cheese. If you wait 'til it fully sets up it is ten times the work. Get the high spots off and try to get it to shape. You may have to apply "cheese" a second or third time to get it right, try to keep it as thin as possible. When it is as close to the final shape as possible use wet/dry sand paper without the block and shape the final curves by hand. Use 120 grit or so, wet and add a squirt of dish soap to the water. Try not to sand in any flat spots or you'll have to go back and re-fill. Wet it down and look at your work at a angle to see how you're doing. Running your hand over it, you can feel what imperfections you cannot see. The only power sander I use is a pneumatic inline for long flat sections like doors or hoods.

I agree. I don't think there is a power sander that will give you the control that you have doing it by hand.
