How do you paint a spring?

Hi Folks,

Not that I'm anywhere near having a restored tractor... but I've wondered from time to time how one paints a spring (such as a seat spring or a governor spring) in a "proper" tractor restoration so that it looks good, protects the metal, and remains functional all at the same time.

Do you stretch the spring open to try and get paint inside it, and then let it close when the paint cures.... or do you just spray paint the outside only and attempt to brush paint the innards?

My brand new governor spring has already turned very rusty... and I'm not sure how to go about protecting it from rusting in half like the old one did!

Happy Tractoring, -Schotte

Dip it in the paint, all the while stretching it out a bit. Then hang it up to dry, preferably stretched out just enough to let the paint dry in the coils!
