I just bought a windmill and want to paint the blades red and white. Its has a thick galvanized finish on it. What do I need to do to get paint to stick to it. Also what type of paint do I need that will last and not peel off quick, Thanks

Hi SB,

I recommend you use a phosphoric acid cleaning and conditioning treatment prior to priming with a two part epoxy primer. Then you can topcoat with a paint of your choice...preferably an automotive enamel or urethane. I recommend the enamel unless you have special fresh air breathing equipment available.

These products are available from suppliers of automotive paint products. I'll give you the PPG product numbers I am familiar with. They are also available on-line at AutoBodyDepot.net. DuPont has similar products and I suspect Martin Senour (NAPA) has similar ones also.

Cleaner - DX 579
Conditioner - DX 520
Primer - OMNI MP-170 (w/ MP-175 catalyst)

Whatever products you use, make sure you get the manufacturer's technical data sheets (available on-line) that detail proper application and safety procedures. Epoxy primers generally have a time window prior to topcoating. This window varies with the manufacturer (the MP-170 is 3 days maximum) and will be spelled out in the data sheet. You should stay within the window if you want the best adhesion of the topcoat.
