Where can I get Phosphpric acid by the gallon? I have looked at all the paint stores and hardware stores in the area and they thing I am from Mars. The only stuff I found was the overpriced solution used for auto painting and a chemical supply house with lab grade stuff for $75/ gallon.

I found some at my local hardware under the brand name OSPHO. It was priced at $12.00 per qt or $22.00 per gallon. I bought a gallon and as thin as the stuff is I think it will go a long way.

Try Muritic acid. The same basic thing and works exactly the same way. Easier to find also.

Are you KIDDING, the only similarity is the word ACID.
Muriatic will eat rust and clean iron, but it will also hide in the microporoscity, and cause rust to return.
Phosphoric will convert rust {Iron Oxide} to Iron Phosphate.

Franz.
It goes without saying that Muritic acid has to be neutralized. Baking soda works well if left in contact with the metal for several minutes.
The only problem is after washing for the last time yoiu can get a flash rust over the bare metal, but it wipes off easily. I have never had a proble using muritic acid.

Several liquid toilet bowl cleaners use Phosphuric acid and not Hydrochloric acid. Works fine

Doesn't the muriatic acid have to be neutralized after application. I read a post from a guy who used it, and after a period of time, the acid let the rust form underneath the paint. I have tried the phosphoric acid on the Farmall 100 I am preparing to paint and it seems to work great.

We buy it 85% strength from a chemical supply house, USP grade. We dilute that about 10 -1 with water. Thanks to OSHA and other government do good agencys, you'll usually have to buy a chemical weight container the first time you buy the acid.
You can also buy it as "metal prep" from body shop suppliers, in ready to use strength, as well as Home Depo.
If you have a friend at CocaCola, it is a primary ingredient in their fine beverage.

Franz,
You would change your tune if you had a consumer weight container break and spill acid, resulting in severe chemical burns!
