I have an old John Deere manure spreader I want to paint.

The purpose of painting it is strictly for preservation. While I'd just as soon it didn't look like it was painted with a broom, I'm not about to spend the time and money to get an expo quality paint job on a working turd hearse. I don't want to have to deal with full body suits and respirators, etc, I just want to slap a reasonably decent looking coat of paint on this thing.

I'll be spraying it with an el cheapo Sears gun.

My questions are these:

1. What can I put on it for a rust-inhibiting base coat/primer?

2. I want it more-or-less the right shade of JD Green, what paint is compatible with whatever I put on it for a base coat?

3. Will the paint I'm using require reducer/thinner and or hardener, and if so, in what porportions?

For what you are wanting to do I would recommend to use Rustoleum rusty metal primer. It would be a fairly cheap primer and would work well under an implement enamel. Dave.

Thanks, David. That's just the information I was looking for. I used Rustoleum on my F14 under IH Red spraycan paint, and it looks pretty darn good, considering. Has held up nicely over 4 years of use and abuse too.

When I was in fertilizer business we used Spatz paint with great results on fert. equipment. Your local fertilizer dealer should be able to get it or something simular. Clean to bare metal if possible, if not, as clean as you can get, spray with rust killer (Os-phos-O), prime with two coats of primer, perferrable different colors so you can get good coverage, & top with two coats. The Spatz top coats are made to chalk over time & self clean so if you want shiney you will need to top coat with Deere paint.
Later,
Tim
