I have just bought a can of synthetic surfacer with the aim of taking minor rust pitting out of sheet metalwork and was advise to brush it on and then sand down. I had imagined it would be sprayed on and had asked for thinners to go with it. Does anyone have any advice on this? Spray or brush? It would need a lot of thinning to brush as it seems really thick to start with.

I used a polyester filler from PPG that you added hardner. You can spray it but you have to use a gun with a large needle. I used on an old WC hood that had 65 yrs. of setting outside. You do not use any reducer in it. It sands like a dream. Dave.
