One of my tractor restoration books mentions using a self etching primer on bare metal. It also talks about self etching epoxy primer as being a good choice. I was wondering if all the two part epoxies are self etching? From what I have read here the epoxy primers are an excellant choice, I just wondered if some of them were not self etching and would require a self etching primer before them. Thanks for any replies.

There are non-self etching epoxy primers, but you should use a product such as Rass O Nil (phosphoric acid + zinc, I believe) to etch the surface before using the primer--assuming you are down to bare metal. Remember that epoxy primers usually have windows of 24-72 hours during which they must be primed with a primer-surfacer (if needed) or topcoated. Advantage of Rass O Nil is that it prevents the metal from rusting while you work on the rest of the tractor.
