I am a novice at painting tractors but am trying to prep and paint our old farmall m. First - is it necessary to use a hvlp spray gun ? If so, can I use a hvlp gun that says I do Not have to have a turbine for my compressor ? My compressor
delivers 12.3cfm at 90psi and the hvlp spray gun says no turbine needed but says the gun needs 18cfm. Should I just junk the hvlp idea and spray with a cheap 20$ air gun from home depot or menards ? Thanks for any tips - Joe

Don't know what you are looking at but I never heard of a gun that needs 18 cfm. If your compressor puts out a true 12 cfm at 90 psi it will handle nearly any HVLP gun. I think the turbine systems are for professional painters. Forget the $20 gun. Go to www.sharpe1.com for some ideas. You can get an excellent refurbished Sharpe Platinum HVLP gun from them for about $180 ($350 or so gun). Their site also lists air requirements, etc and has a forum to ask questions. There are also other high quality brands. Look at www.thetoolwarehouse.net (think that's correct, if not do a search) for a good selection of guns. Some people are satisfied with cheap ones -- Sears, etc, but you get what you pay for. If you have never painted before don't even consider a non-hvlp gun. Some pros don't like them because they require a somewhat different technique -- you won't know the difference, and MUCH less overspray.

The Low Volume Platinum guns only need 7.5 cfm so your compressor will easily handle one. They are a top of the line gun and will also do a much better job than any turbine powered gun under $1,000.
